In O’Brien’s doctrine to Winston Smith, O’Brien explains to Smith that he will never win and that only the thoughts of the party are accurate. When O’Brien tells Smith that “What-ever the Party holds to be the truth is truth. It is impossible to see reality except by looking through the eyes of the Party.” Smith is shocked because O’Brien was someone that Smith once admired and thought shared his dislike for Big Brother with.
Big Brother wants complete control of the people living in his ministry. Knowledge is power therefore, if he removes knowledge from those the party wishes to control they will not be able to over throw the party.
The party attempts to “re-teach” the past to the members of INGSOC because by rewriting history and changing the language into Newspeak they destroy an possible chance that the outside world can help them escape from Big Brothers control. By having the telescreens, Winston and his fellow comrades would never be able to escape. Their privacy was taken away from them and they wouldn’t even be able to use facial expressions that they chose because they have a fear that the thought police would catch on to the meaning behind their own thought. Winston had to hide his writing in the diary in his own home. He had to disguise his expression when he read his “I love you” note from Julia. When Winston and Julia met on there first date/outing they had to be careful of hidden microphones.
By using Newspeak to remove words from their dictionary the people of the ministry can’t even think about committing thought crime.
The people didn’t resist turning over their lives to INGSOC.
Unlike Winston, I think that Winston’s comrades choose to leave their memories of their previous life behind and submit to Big Brother and his party because they felt safe under Big Brother’s law. They felt as if Newspeak would be easier for them. If Big Brother was in control they wouldn’t have to worry about anything or make decisions.
Winston was angered by the thought that Big Brother was rewriting history and changing words. He was upset that the party was taking over everyone’s lives and constantly watching them and controlling them.
In the beginning of the book Winston really doesn’t have a hard time recalling his past life with his mother at the end of the book Winston is confused about his own memories of his life before Big Brother.
Although Winston didn’t want to turn over his beliefs and memories before Big Brother to the party, after Winston and Julia are removed from the apartment above the store and taken to the room and tortured, Winston submits to O’Brien and Big Brother because he is physically tortured and manipulated because he wants to save his own life.
