This act discusses the madness that Hamlet is enduring.
Although Hamlet believes that the ghost really is his father he is concerned that this information may be false. He decides that he is going to create a play where the actors will reenact the death of his father. As his uncle and new king watches the play Hamlet will spy and see his face. He believes that if he acts surprised then he really did kill the late king and the ghost really was the late Hamlet.
One of the main questions regarding the play that stuck with me throughout was whether Hamlet was actually crazy or just pretending to fool his family and friends. A part of me thinks that he was just acting crazy in order to trick everyone. He wanted them to believe that he has lost his mind so that he could fool them. The events that Hamlet endured didn’t help the fact that he was mental unstable. The death of his father, the remarriage of his mother to his uncle and the odd behavior of his girlfriend Ophelia would make him fall into depression. I wonder how the play’s plot would change if Gertrude didn’t run off and marry Hamlets uncle right away. Would Hamlet ever have found out the Claudius killed his father? Would King Hamlet have ever come to young Hamlet to tell the story?
